From Concept to Creation
As part of our exam project at Sonic College, a group of six students, including myself, embarked on the creation of the film “Kræ.” The requirements were simple: we had to make a movie by ourselves in a short time, and the sound had to be done in Dolby Atmos
In addition to conceptualizing the story and writing the script for the movie, I also took on the role of editing the film during the post-production phase. As we delved into the realm of sound design, my primary responsibilities included recording foley and composing music for the film.
I edited the movie using DaVinci Resolve.
Crafting an Unconventional Score
The musical direction we embraced encompassed an organic and whimsical atmosphere, deliberately contrasting the film’s visual elements. We chose to primarily feature the accordion, played in a 3/4 signature often associated with romantic and sociable occasions, which was a purposeful decision. The score melds a diverse range of instruments, including xylophone, acoustic guitar, saxophone, upright bass, choir, and even unconventional percussion like pots and pans. Notably, we maintained a steadfast principle of employing exclusively recorded audio, completely avoiding MIDI.
The score was composed using Ableton Live and then bounced into stem groups. Following this, the stems were panned within ProTools using the Dolby Atmos Render to achieve our desired sound placement.
