Score – Forskel Fra Fødslen (Different by Birth)
In March and April 2024, I had the pleasure of composing the score for Anne Saabye’s short film Forskel Fra Fødslen (Different by Birth).
The film tells the story of two sisters, Signe and Fie. As Signe prepares for her wedding, her sister Fie — who has Down syndrome — suddenly runs away with the wedding dress just before the ceremony.
For Forskel Fra Fødslen, I composed a predominantly symphonic score built around classical orchestral instruments. The music gradually develops alongside the emotional arc of the film and culminates in the climax, where an organ is introduced. The instrument is closely connected to the church setting — the film’s only location — and helps underline the sense of space, gravity, and emotion tied to that environment.
The score is closely woven into the story, with many musical details carefully shaped to follow the characters and events on screen. In this way, the music helps carry the narrative forward and supports the emotional development of the film without drawing attention away from it.
